Deodorant

by Beth Jezier

Let’s chat about deodorant today. Now I’m not going to tell you that you need to use it or even what kind to use. That final decision is for you. What I want to talk about today is the packaging.

The deodorant industry produces 15 million pounds of plastic waste a year. Yikes! That’s a lot of waste. It’s also just a drop in the proverbial “plastic” bucket. It may seem like plastic is the bad guy in my posts…well, it is.

The good news. The deodorant industry is starting to come up with better, more environmentally friendly packaging. Some mainstream stores (Target, for instance) as well as some boutique brands of deodorant will let you get a starter kit that have refillable containers. These containers may be made of aluminum or plastic but at least you only get the holder once. Then you can just get refills.

Even better, are the brands that are making the containers out of cardboard. (Think push-up ice cream when we were kids.) Works great and no plastic waste. Check out a few companies like NATIVE and Wellow. There are plenty out there and your favorite brand might just have a more environmentally conscious choice.

These small steps can make a huge impact. Thanks for being a good Earthling!
